About the company
For 90 years, Doig+Smith has been a trusted name in the UK construction industry, built on a proud heritage of expertise, integrity and delivery.
From our roots to today, we have consistently evolved, combining deep industry knowledge with a modern, forward-thinking mindset. As we look ahead, our ambition is clear: to lead from the front. We are continually investing in our people, embracing new technologies, and championing smarter, more sustainable ways of working and helping our clients navigate complexity, reduce risk and unlock opportunity.
At Doig+Smith, our legacy is our foundation – but our focus is firmly on the future.
About the role
Doig+Smith are looking to hire a Salaried Director within their Edinburgh office to accelerate growth and build on the already stellar reputation within their market.
The Edinburgh office has an existing client base that is predominantly Private Sector in focus, and the successful individual will be expected to drive further growth in existing accounts as well as targeting new business wins.
The ability to bring clients with you is preferrable, it is by no means essential as Doig+Smith have the network and contacts available to enable the new Director to drive growth. With a track record that includes a 100% Client Satisfaction score and 80% of their clients returning with future projects.
This individual will initially be part of the Leadership that sits on the Groups Strategy Board and it is anticipated that following a year of success, you will be given the opportunity to partner with the business as an equity participant.
With an already strong commission structure, this represents an opportunity for someone looking to gain more leadership responsibilities and the ability to become an integral part of the leadership and decision making group in a fairly short period of time after joining.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the Edinburgh office and its day-to-day performance, including growth, profitability, people, culture, resource planning, client service and delivery standards.
- Drive business development, key-account growth, repeat work, new client relationships and diversification into new sectors and markets.
- Develop future leaders through mentoring, succession planning, knowledge-sharing and active support of the Doig+Smith Training Academy.
- Represent the business externally and strengthen its profile across clients, professional bodies, industry groups and networks.
- The successful candidate will sit on the Strategy Board. This is a company-wide role focused on growth, diversification, innovation, strategic projects and delivery of the Business Strategy. It is not an Edinburgh QS forum and is not limited by office or discipline. Active preparation, attendance and contribution are expected.
Candidate requirements
- Doig+Smith are building the next generation of the business with a new Board Of Directors, this Edinburgh Director will be an integral part of that development. An exciting moment to join a business driving transformational growth and new opportunities internally.
- This opportunity requires a growth-oriented individual rather than caretaking client position with a view to driving overall growth in the Edinburgh region. As such strong knowledge of the Edinburgh and wider Scottish market, with an established network and a demonstrable record of winning and retaining profitable fee-earning work.
- As part of the growth focus, Doig+Smith are looking for someone who can think, plan and strategise. As well as proactively engaging with clients e.g. networking, B2B meetings, events etc.
- Collaborative and company-minded. This is not a role for someone interested only in “their” office, discipline or clients.
- A visible, hands-on leader who can develop people, manage resources, protect quality and create an ambitious, supportive and accountable office culture.
- Commercially strong: understands budgets, margins, project profitability, cashflow and debt management — and takes personal responsibility for results. Ideally experience of securing frameworks and organising client bid submissions
- Accountable for results and for the growth drive of the Edinburgh office overall
- This role sits on the strategy board, it is expected that you will think bigger picture i.e. what cities should Doig+Smith be operating in, what markets, what frameworks should be driven harder, what technology is going to revolutionise the future of Doig+Smith.
- You will be ready to embrace marketing and BD, building on existing relationships and working with existing directors to create new ones
- Take an interest in technology and innovation, including AI, digital twins and carbon-tracking
- You will have or build a visible profile with professional bodies, industry groups and networks
- Qualified Quantity Surveyor, MRICS, with the credibility and experience to operate at Director level.
