About the role

Our Organisation

Since 1971, Bield Housing & Care have been developing housing and services to enable Scotland’s older people to live the life they want. We are one of the largest social landlords in Scotland and a leading provider of retirement housing and care services. We work with 24 health & social care partnerships across Scotland, own or part-own over 5000 homes, and employ around 850 employees and casual workers, alongside a network of 120 volunteers.

Our brand promise is ‘Free to Be’: this sums up our firm belief that older people should have the freedom to make their own choices and live as independently as possible. This is a promise which, thanks to the dedication, experience and passion of our staff and volunteers, we are uniquely placed to bring to life.

We provide a number of critical services to tenants including; Retirement Housing (which includes additional care services), Amenity & General Needs Housing, Owner & Property Management Services, Alarm Response & Telecare, Repairs & Beyond Housing Care Services. We have also invested in new services which include the adoption of new technology for proactive telecare, and digital services for tenants.

The Opportunity

We are proud to have recently published our new 5-year corporate strategy and business plan which will run through to 2028. This plan will ensure we are well placed to continue improving customer experience & satisfaction, invest more into people’s homes, explore how technology can support us and ultimately in making it possible for more people to live their best lives, at home, surrounded by a supportive community.

We are excited about the future and our ability to help our tenants despite the challenges we face which include the cost-of-living crisis, our ageing population and climate change. We have a committed and resilient group of workers and the capability to confront these challenges head on.

Coinciding with the publication of this strategy, we are now seeking to appoint a new Chair for our business due to the end of our existing Chair’s term and successful tenure.

Our new Chair will lead us, in conjunction with the wider Board of Directors, through the next five years of our corporate strategy and business plan, ensuring robust governance is in place.

We are seeking to appoint a new Chair who will help move us forward by;

  • Holding ultimate accountabilities for all corporate governance and risk management to operate effectively in line with organisational and industry regulatory requirements
  • Providing strategic leadership to the Board of Trustees and direction where required
  • Acting as an ambassador for the organisation and representing us where appropriate at external functions, meetings & events
  • Helping drive efficiency and effectiveness of the organisation through informed decision making with the Board of Trustees
  • Providing support where required to the Chief Executive and wider leadership team through constructive working relationships

Candidate Requirements

We are looking to appoint an experienced Non-Executive Director who has service time as a Non-Executive Director or Chair in a highly regulated organisation – preferably within public or third sector.

Our new Chair will have a collaborative, influential and engaging style with the ability to shape and develop corporate governance strategies and the ability to assume responsibility for managing the alignment and direction of a dedicated Board of Trustees.

It is not essential the individual has operated in the role of Chair before, although it is essential to have had operated as a Senior Non-Executive Director in a relevant industry.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience of operating on Executive teams/Boards and being close to commercial decision making with some experience of chairing meetings, events and sub-committees for example.
