Historic Environment Scotland (HES) leads on the protection and promotion of some of Scotland’s iconic heritage assets; its castles, its palaces, its heritage collections and archives. It is also a regulator of Scotland’s built heritage environment, a grant provider, a research organisation and an expert heritage adviser. It is charged by the Scottish Government to work with and serve the wider heritage sector and the private, public and third sectors more widely.

As well as being responsible for more than 300 properties of national importance including Edinburgh Castle, Skara Brae and Fort George, which together draw more than 5 million visitors per year, HES also plays a role in the economy, education and skills, placemaking, well-being and net zero. It’s influence really is wide ranging

The role

We are looking for an exceptional Chief Executive Officer (CEO) who will be an ambitious, inspirational, and transformational leader setting and driving the achievement of the long-term strategic direction of HES.

Reporting to the Board, you will work closely with colleagues across the organisation and external partners to shape and deliver the organisation’s strategy. As the Accountable Officer, the CEO is responsible for the leadership of a team of senior professionals working across a number of corporate functions.  As an ambassador for the organisation, you will represent HES locally, nationally and internationally.

The successful candidate

We are looking for an exceptional candidate who will play a critical and visible role in leading HES, internally and externally.  You will be inspirational, enterprising and politically astute with excellent communication skills and energy.  With prior experience of operating at a senior strategic level within a complex delivery organisation, you will be able to demonstrate a track record of exceptional stakeholder management skills, financial acumen and the ability to drive organisational development and culture.
