About the role
As Scotland’s resource efficiency and circular economy expert, Zero Waste Scotland exists to create a society where resources are valued and nothing is wasted. Funded by the Scottish Government, the organisation operates with the goal to help realise the economic, environmental and social benefits of making the best use of the world’s natural resources, supporting the Scottish Governments circular economy strategy.
In doing so, Zero Waste Scotland works strategically with key partners, including SEPA, the Enterprise Agencies, Scottish Futures Trust, Skills Development Scotland, and others, to deliver their programme of work.
Since its inception in 2009, the organisation has grown to employ 180 people and expand its focus on waste management to now include energy efficiency, low carbon heat and circular economy business support.

The Opportunity
This is a truly fantastic opportunity to be part of a growth journey with an organisation at the forefront of Scotland’s environmental and global sustainability agenda.
With Zero Waste Scotland’s 2019 production of a new 4-year corporate plan, the organisation is undertaking an exciting large-scale transformation which will enable it to operate more effectively, and deliver its desired strategic outcomes of promoting responsible consumption, production and maximising value from energy and waste.
An experienced and strategically minded Chief Financial Officer is now sought to join the organisation. The CFO will not only be accountable for driving overall commercial performance, but will provide broader leadership for the organisation as a whole. They will play a critical role in driving cultural change and developing the financial and commercial strategy across the organisation. As part of this the CFO will support in identifying where resources will be allocated and what work packages Zero Waste Scotland will prioritise, and ensure that governance, systems, processes and people capability are in place to facilitate future growth.
In addition to maximising return from existing funding, there may be opportunities to identify additional future funding sources and manage the associated risk. In doing so, the organisation will adopt a more commercial and outward looking approach through its transformation journey.
They will act as an agent for change and a facilitator in the overall transformation programme, inspiring those around them and driving operational excellence across the organisation.
The Candidate
The individual will be a high impact finance leader and qualified accountant (CA, CIMA or equivalent), bringing a breadth of experience across private and public sectors. They will possess commercial flair as well as an understanding of public sector policy and frameworks and be highly experienced in driving change transformation programmes with a true focus on people and development.
