Finance Director

About the role

Lyon & Turnbull is one of the longest established fine art and antiques auction houses in the UK. Established in Edinburgh in 1826, the business has an unrivalled history in Scotland and a wealth of specialist knowledge across many categories of fine art, jewellery and antiques. Specialist auctions and single-owner collection sales are particular strengths of the business.

Lyon & Turnbull has a strong and growing presence in London and is highly progressive in its use of technology. It holds in the region of 45 auctions per annum and technology has enabled the business in recent years to successfully bring the auction experience for both buyers and sellers almost entirely online and over the phone.

The opportunity has arisen for an outstanding individual to join the Board of Lyon & Turnbull in the role of Finance Director (FD). Reporting directly to the Managing Director, Gavin Strang, and working closely with the shareholders and senior executives, the FD will be responsible for all financial aspects of the business and will be expected to add value commercially, strategically and operationally across all areas.

The FD will be responsible for:

  • Control and ownership of all financial aspects of the business
  • Accuracy and timeliness of monthly management information, budgeting and cash flow
  • Insightful commentary and analysis of the numbers
  • Driving efficiencies through cost control and strong cash management
  • Production of year end accounts and working papers for audit
  • Preparation and submission of corporation tax and VAT returns
  • Regularly reviewing the risk profile of the company and proposing mitigations where appropriate
  • Helping to position Finance as a Business Partner across the business
  • Participating in key strategic decisions of the Board across all aspects of the business
  • Providing support and challenge to the Managing Director.

We are looking for an experienced and highly credible Finance Director with initiative, emotional intelligence and strong commercial acumen, who will form part of a strong and balanced leadership team. This is an excellent opportunity to help shape the business to enable further growth.

We are looking to appoint a professionally qualified accountant with excellent communication and stakeholder management skills. We are very open on sector background but a natural interest in the world of fine art and antiques will be an advantage.
