Head of Finance and Corporate Services

About the role

CLAN Cancer Support is a well-established, local charity providing emotional and practical support to people affected by cancer, their family, carers and friends. Services are freely offered to all from pre-diagnosis and diagnosis through treatment and beyond at 11 support and wellbeing centres located across north-east Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland. The charity’s aim is to help people live with and beyond their or their loved one’s cancer diagnosis and improve the quality of life for all those who turn to the charity for help and support.

The organisation has a staff of 68 comprising full-time and part-time employees and contracted staff, supplemented by a significant community of over 400 volunteers. The cancer support service delivery team operates a range of professional services extending from CLAN Haven and the cancer support centre in Aberdeen, to the ‘local’ infrastructure aimed at providing services wherever they are most needed within communities.

CLAN makes a significant impact on the 3000 people diagnosed with cancer every year in north east Scotland. During 2019 over 2600 clients were supported, 1625 of which were new clients, through 30,000+ hours of support and >7000 drop-in sessions. The Children and Families Service supported 384 children and their families in over 2000 contact sessions. CLAN Haven provides B&B accommodation for cancer patients attending hospital in Aberdeen for treatment from outside the local area, often travelling long distances and staying for up to six weeks. In 2019 there were over 7500 overnight stays in the Haven for cancer patients, their carers or family members.

Effective income generation and business development allows CLAN to deliver its essential support services and the organisation has an established and successful income generation and business development team. The charity has grown considerably over the last few years and the team has continuously responded successfully to the financial requirements of this ambitious charity in an increasingly challenging external environment.

Behind these external activities of service delivery and income generation, sits a dedicated corporate services team, reporting directly to the CEO. In the past few years, CLAN has started a process of self-evaluation, challenging its values, confirming its purpose and defining the culture of the business. The recent departure of the Head of Finance after 12 years in post, offers a catalyst for further change with the appointment of a Head of Finance and Corporate Services to lead the financial planning and operational development of the business, joining the senior management team to help us deliver our strategic plan and vision for cancer support in the north of Scotland.

Based at CLAN House in Aberdeen, the successful candidate will:

  • Assume responsibility for the finances and risk management of the business, its subsidiary CLAN Now, line managing the finance team to ensure the effective management of all aspects of financial planning, accounting, reporting and compliance.
  • Work closely with the CEO, lead on the strategic management of operations ensuring that high quality corporate services are delivered in line with the company’s purpose, aims and values.
  • Ensure that CLAN provides a stimulating and collaborative workplace and that the right staffing levels, skills and resources are in place for the company to meet its charitable purpose.
  • Oversee and project manage the delivery of capital projects, ensuring they are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Drive plans for organisational development, including talent and succession management; identify the potential for change and new ways of working; and help the senior management team to implement these.
  • Liaise with external providers to ensure sound legal and HR advice is provided as required.
  • Lead the assessment, enhancement and implementation of existing and new operational processes and systems, including the adoption of digital technologies where appropriate.
  • Lead, direct and support the corporate services team.
  • Contribute to the overall management of CLAN as a member of the Senior Management Team, reporting to the CEO and Board of Trustees.

The new appointee will be a key part of our management team, actively contributing to strategic planning.  Candidates will be from a finance background with membership of a professional accountancy body, possess sound business acumen and ideally have experience of working at senior level in an organisation with complex operations. While experience of working at a senior level in a not-for-profit would be beneficial, it is not essential.

Most importantly, the successful candidate will share our passion for what we do, promoting our values and representing CLAN across all sectors in local communities across the north east.
