About the role

Our governing body, the University Court, is an incredible team of Lay Governors from across society and governors drawn from the staff and student community.  Now we look to appoint four new Lay members of Court. We are looking for engaging, experienced and strategically focused candidates who will assist GCU navigate the current complex higher education environment whilst thoughtfully partnering with an equally engaged Vice Chancellor and senior staff to set conditions for the University’s future and the success of its students.   

With a wide range of professionally accredited courses and links with over 300 industry partners, we are the top university in Scotland for students in employment and/or further study within 15 months of graduating at 92% – with 78% of graduates in highly skilled occupations (HESA 2025). We are Scotland’s leading provider of Graduate Apprenticeships.   

We’re passionate about helping more young people from diverse backgrounds into university, with 23% of our Scottish full-time, first-degree entrants drawn from the country’s 20% most-disadvantaged backgrounds (Scottish Funding Council 2025). An independent economic impact report highlighted that Glasgow Caledonian is a powerful asset to the City of Glasgow, not only bringing economic and employment opportunities, but working to address the deep-rooted economic, social and health inequalities in the City.  At the same time, we have global partnerships and reach which we are consolidating and expanding.  

We are the only Scottish university with EcoCampus Platinum accreditation and were ranked first in Scotland for sustainability in the most recent People and Planet league table (2024).

We welcome candidates who share our values, embrace the Common Good, and will bring their high-level talents and experience to support our mission and ambitions. First and foremost, we seek collaborators, problem solvers, innovators, and experienced Board members. The Court looks for a mix of public, private and third-sector experience and a broad range of professional skills in its membership.  Candidates who can also contribute from backgrounds of political understandinggeopolitical insightbrand identity and communications, and knowledge of embedding AI and digital transformation would be of especial interest.
