About the Role
The Offshore Energy Managing Director will lead GBE’s minority investment strategy in offshore technologies, with a particular focus on driving the commercialisation of Deep-Water Offshore Wind (DWOW) including floating and hybrid technologies. The role holder will also drive decision making about GB Energy’s portfolio strategy in technologies beyond DWOW.
This role demands entrepreneurial leadership and deep sector expertise, with a strong focus on investment origination and management, supported by project development, construction, and operations expertise. The successful candidate will focus on investment origination, strategic partnerships, and investment management to deliver long-term value and influence in key offshore projects. The role requires exceptional capability in structuring minority equity positions, joint ventures, and governance oversight.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of Supply Chain in driving interventionist market action which accelerates technology convergence, supply chain investment and cost reduction.
Key Responsibilities
Investment Origination and Management
- Originate and evaluate investment opportunities in FLOW, The Crown Estate (TCE) Partnership projects, and CCUS initiatives. Lead negotiations and structuring of minority equity positions, joint ventures, and strategic alliances.
- Manage the investment lifecycle: due diligence, transaction execution, governance oversight, and performance monitoring, with support from GBE’s Investment Execution and Portfolio Management team.
- Manage GBE’s offshore assets and minority investments, supporting GBE’s role in being an effective minority owner and representing its interest within JVs.
- Secure capital allocation through robust investment cases and deliver measurable returns on invested capital.
Commercial and Financial Execution
- Drive investment execution from Heads of Terms to close, working with GBE’s Investment Execution team on external due diligence, and deal structuring (minority equity, JVs, grants/loans).
- Oversee commercial Route-to-Market strategies, including Power Purchase Agreements and revenue optimisation.
- Establish strategic partnerships with developers, investors, and supply chain partners to accelerate project delivery.
Risk, Governance & Compliance
- In alignment with GBE-wide governance, oversee the implementation of enterprise‑grade risk management frameworks spanning financial, operational, regulatory, planning and community risks.
- Ensure compliance with subsidy control, regulatory frameworks, and public sector governance standards.
- Oversee transparent reporting, assurance and audit readiness consistent with public sector standards.
Operational Excellence
- As GBE transitions selected technologies into majority investor and/or operator roles: Drive performance optimisation across all assets, implementing best practices for reliability, efficiency, and sustainability.
Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration
- Build and maintain relationships with government bodies, investors, and supply chain partners to influence policy and secure strategic partnerships.
- Act as a key leader within GBE’s project teams, coordinating with Onshore, Local and cross‑cutting Supply Chain functions to ensure pipeline coherence, procurement leverage and UK jobs.
People & Culture
- Develop and inspire a high‑performing, multidisciplinary team blending development, project finance, construction, operations, customer service and data/tech skills.
- Foster a culture of purpose, performance and inclusion with clear accountabilities, learning pathways and leadership succession plans.
Public Representation
- Serve as a visible spokesperson for GBE Offshore for media, conferences, investor and community forums, communicating progress, impact and lessons learned with clarity and credibility.
Person Specification
Essential Experience and Skills
- Extensive sector experience: Deep understanding of UK energy market, regulatory frameworks, and planning processes. An experienced professional in the offshore renewable energy sector or related investment roles, including s in senior leadership managing renewable portfolios within utility-scale power generation.
- Commercial and financial acumen: Proven expertise in project financing, investment, and asset management, with advanced analytical capabilities.
- Strategic leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead large, complex projects and high-performing teams; able to inspire and motivate in a dynamic environment.
- Adaptability: Comfortable operating in a start-up environment and managing ambiguity while delivering results.
- Vision and influence: Ability to set clear goals, prioritise effectively, and confidently represent the business to investors, regulators, industry bodies, and communities.
- Collaboration and relationship-building: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to foster cross-functional and external stakeholder relationships.
- Execution under pressure: Skilled at managing multiple projects simultaneously, meeting tight deadlines, and thriving in a fast-paced environment.
- Capability development: Experience in building and supporting asset management teams and internal capabilities.
Desirable Skills:
- Public Representation: Experience as a spokesperson at national or regional level, media interviews, conferences, and community forums, communicating complex energy and investment topics clearly and credibly.
- Policy and Regulatory Insight: Deep understanding of UK energy policy development, subsidy control, and regulatory frameworks governing local generation, flexibility markets, and community ownership.
- Supply Chain Development: Knowledge of UK supply chain dynamics for local energy technologies and experience in initiatives to strengthen domestic content and regional economic impact.
- Public Sector Governance: Understanding of government investment standards, assurance processes, and compliance requirements for debt and equity investments.
Qualifications:
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in engineering, energy, economics, finance, public policy or a related discipline.
- Postgraduate qualifications and/or professional accreditation (e.g., CEng, CFA, PMI/Prince2, APM) are advantageous.
