FWB’s Higher Education Practice has had an exceptionally active year, partnering with universities across Scotland to appoint Chairs of Court and Lay Members who will lead the governing for the sector. Over the past 12 months, the team has supported a wide range of institutions through key non‑executive appointments, reflecting the sector’s ambition for exceptional leaders in these critical posts, and the increasing complexity and challenges that HE Boards are facing.
This period has seen FWB deliver appointments across many different universities, each requiring a blend of strategic insight, stakeholder engagement, and a deep commitment to the Scottish HE landscape.
Some examples include:
- University of Strathclyde, Convenor of Court and Lay Members
- University of West of Scotland, Chair of Court
- University of Edinburgh, Chair of Court
- University of Dundee, Chair of Court
- Glasgow Caledonian University, 5 Lay Members of Court
The Benefits of Joining the Court of a University
Higher education remains one of Scotland’s most mission‑driven environments. Leaders joining the sector consistently highlight the satisfaction that comes from contributing to institutions with a clear public purpose: supporting social mobility, widening access, driving innovation, and strengthening Scotland’s global reputation for learning and research. The work is intellectually rich, values‑led, and offers the chance to influence long‑term societal impact.
For individuals considering their first non‑executive role, higher education offers an ideal entry point. University courts and boards value diverse professional backgrounds, and first‑time NEDs often bring exactly the kind of fresh perspective institutions are seeking. Governance structures are well‑established, induction is robust, and the collegiate culture provides a supportive environment for developing boardroom capability.
Scottish higher education is navigating a period of transformation, spurred by financial pressures, demographic shifts, international competition, digital learning, and the evolving needs of students and staff. This creates a dynamic environment where strategic leadership truly matters. For candidates, it offers complexity, variety, and the opportunity to contribute to institutions at pivotal moments in their development.
