FWB Park Brown and Business Growth Fund (BGF) recently jointly hosted a dinner at The Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh, focusing on the role of the Chair and Non-Executive Director, particularly within a private equity backed environment. BGF’s Chair Sir Nigel Rudd addressed a gathering of over 30 Chairs and NEDs. Sir Nigel provided some amusing and insightful tales from the many challenges and business situations that he has faced throughout a long and high profile career, as well as some views on the implications of Brexit. The discussion was challenging and stimulating as the guests shared their views and experiences and sought further insight from Sir Nigel on key business issues.
The evening was topped off for Sir Nigel when it was suggested by FWB Park Brown’s Willie Finlayson that the 1972 Derby County team of Bolton, Webster, Nish, Todd, McFarland, McGovern, Hector, Gemmill, Durban, Hinton and O’Hare was the greatest team ever to grace an English football park!
Sir Nigel Rudd is best known as founder of Williams plc in 1982, which went on to become one of the largest industrial holding companies in the United Kingdom until its demerger in November 2000, creating Chubb plc and Kidde plc. He is presently Chairman of BAA Limited and the technology company Invensys plc. Sir Nigel became Chairman of BGF in February 2011. He has been Chairman of some of the largest companies in the UK, including Pilkington, Alliance Boots and the UK’s largest car retailer, Pendragon PLC, the company he founded with one dealership in 1982. He was a Director of Barclays PLC for 13 years, latterly as Deputy Chairman.
