The Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation has announced the appointment of a renowned Hong Kong sustainability expert, Dr Shelly Zhou, to head up the Hong Kong Centre for Carbon Innovation. Dr Zhou has more than ten years of experience in environmental and carbon management consultancy, new energy and biotechnology in Hong Kong, China and Singapore. She joins from the Hong Kong Jockey Club, where she led on corporate sustainability performance for seven years.

Ms Zhou said: “I am delighted to be appointed as the CEO of the Scotland Hong Kong Carbon Innovation Centre. I relish the opportunity to engage Hong Kong businesses in the important work of the centre and in establishing strong, on-going relationships and partnerships with innovative Scottish businesses and the University of Edinburgh. We will be working with business leaders to support and deliver much-needed, low-carbon solutions for our future.”

Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, officially opened the centre in 2015.

The Team Scotland Centre is led by the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation (ECCI) and is funded by the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, BRE Scotland and Scottish Development International. The centre will share and develop best practice with the Hong Kong government agencies, academic and business partners for the future of low-carbon technologies in Hong Kong. Low carbon experts will focus on projects including sustainable buildings, mobility, pollution and waste issues, energy efficiency and carbon monitoring and management. The centre builds upon a 2013 memorandum of understanding between the Hong Kong Government and Scottish Government to develop closer partnerships to address the key challenges of climate change and a lower carbon economy.

The centre in Hong Kong will collaborate with experts from Scottish organisations and enterprises and will host and employ staff recruited from Scotland and Hong Kong. It will serve as a landing pad for Scottish organisations wishing to engage in Hong Kong.

FWB Park Brown Director, Stuart Cochrane said: “our brief was to identify and attract candidates with strong local networks, carbon innovation technical knowledge and credibility within Hong Kong’s business, investor and government communities. In partnership with the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation we leveraged the networks of FWB Park Brown, the ECCI and the University of Edinburgh in a very coordinated manner to give this role extensive exposure within the Hong Kong and mainland China regions. Supported by a targeted advertising campaign we successfully compiled a strong long-list that was narrowed down to a short-list, resulting in the successful appointment of Dr Zhou”.
