In an interview with Scott Wright at The Herald Scotland, Sandy Begbie, Chief Executive of Scottish Financial Enterprise and Chair of the Scottish HR Leadership Group (SHRLG), warned of the danger of young people drifting further from the workplace in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic.
Having recently produced the Young Person’s Guarantee report on behalf of the Scottish Government, Sandy spoke of the current over-supply of labour following redundancies caused by the pandemic. He talked about how an over-supply situation leads to the demand side hiring the most qualified and experienced candidates which sees young people, already furthest from the workplace, drifting further still.
Sandy highlighted the need for a targeted approach in ensuring young people, and people generally, are given the opportunity to reskill via training and apprenticeships. He also commented on the importance of inclusion within this process and ensuring that everyone has the same opportunity regardless of background.
As Chair of the Scottish HR Leadership Group, Sandy spoke about feeling encouraged by the response to the SHRLG Masterclass series, particularly in furthering the debate on workplace inclusion and encouraging positive corporate behaviours.
The Masterclass series has so far seen speakers Monica Lewinsky, Elizabeth Nyamayaro, Yusef Salaam and Geoff Mcdonald deliver insightful talks to many of Scotland’s senior HR leaders and their teams. The next Masterclass, The Emma Burns Lecture with Anna Teal (CEO of Aromatherapy Associates) takes place on Thursday 20th May.
