About the Role
Great British Energy is seeking a Managing Director – Supply Chain to join its executive leadership team and lead GBE’s national supply chain mission and ensure the UK captures more of the industrial value of the clean energy transition.
This is a senior executive leadership role accountable for the strategy, delivery, investment and external leadership of GBE’s supply chain activity, including the £1bn Energy, Engineered in the UK programme.
The Managing Director will lead a senior team comprising of three Directors covering immediate market interventions, commercial investments, public investment programmes and longer-term strategic market shaping.
The role requires exceptional judgement, senior stakeholder credibility, investment understanding, public sector fluency, industrial strategy capability and strong delivery leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead GBE’s overall supply chain strategy and delivery mission, ensuring alignment with GBE’s corporate strategy, clean energy deployment priorities and wider UK industrial objectives.
- Provide executive leadership for Energy, Engineered in the UK, ensuring the programme delivers measurable support for strategically important UK clean energy supply chains.
- Executive leadership of GBE’s ethical supply chain policies and practices, ensuring all supply chain activities uphold GB Energy’s commitments to transparency, sustainability, fair labour standards, and responsible sourcing; monitor compliance and drive continuous improvement to meet public expectations and regulatory requirements
- Oversee the full supply chain intervention portfolio, including commercial investments, grants, blended finance, co-investment, sector programmes, market support mechanisms and longer-term market-shaping interventions.
- Set strategic priorities for where the UK should build, retain or strengthen industrial capability across priority clean energy technologies and enabling sectors.
- Ensure interventions are targeted at areas of strategic importance, market need and public value, including offshore wind, deep-water wind, electricity networks, hydrogen, storage, power electronics, ports, manufacturing and industrial infrastructure.
- Oversee immediate EEUK delivery, commercial investment activity and longer-term strategy and partnership work, ensuring the three Director roles operate as a coherent leadership team.
- Maintain a strong directorate pipeline across businesses, technologies, infrastructure, industrial assets, regional clusters and strategic supply chain segments.
- Lead senior engagement with government departments, HM Treasury, devolved governments, regulators, public finance institutions, The Crown Estate, NESO, Ofgem, local and combined authorities and other public partners.
- Build senior relationships with industry, developers, OEMs, manufacturers, investors, lenders, ports, regional clusters, innovation bodies, universities and international partners.
- Provide senior advice to the CEO, Board and Executive Committee on supply chain strategy, investment priorities, market risks, industrial opportunities and delivery performance.
- Represent GBE externally as a senior voice on clean energy supply chains, industrial capability, public investment and the economic opportunity of the energy transition.
- Ensure the Supply Chains Directorate works effectively with GBE corporate functions, including Finance, Legal, Risk, Governance, Commercial, Procurement, People, Communications and Strategy, so that all activity is compliant, financially controlled, assured and aligned with GBE’s policies, delegations and risk appetite.
- Establish robust directorate governance, including investment approvals, programme controls, risk management, benefits realisation, financial management, performance reporting and post-investment or post-award monitoring.
- Lead reporting on supply chain outcomes, including investment mobilisation, private capital crowded in, jobs, regional growth, UK industrial capability, resilience, taxpayer value and wider economic impact.
- Build and lead a high-performing directorate with the structure, capability, culture and delivery discipline required to execute a major national programme.
Person Specification
Essential Experience and Skills
- Significant senior leadership experience in energy, infrastructure, investment, industrial strategy, supply chains, public finance, economic development, corporate finance or major programme delivery.
- Track record leading complex, high-value programmes, portfolios, investment activity or strategic interventions in public, private or public-private environments.
- Strong understanding of the clean energy sector, industrial capability, manufacturing scale-up, infrastructure delivery, technology commercialisation and strategic supply chain risk.
- Executive-level credibility with boards, senior government officials, industry leaders, investors, lenders, regulators and public institutions.
- Strong investment and commercial judgement, including the ability to assess when equity, debt, grants, blended finance, co-investment, partnerships or market-shaping interventions are appropriate.
- Experience overseeing investment appraisal, business cases, commercial analysis, risk assessment, governance papers, board materials and senior decision-making processes.
- Understanding of public sector governance, public finance, value for money, subsidy control, procurement, assurance and accountability requirements.
- Ability to translate strategy into delivery structures, funding programmes, governance models, performance metrics and measurable outcomes.
- Experience building and leading senior multidisciplinary teams across investment, programme delivery, strategy, partnerships, policy, finance, commercial analysis or market development.
- Excellent communication, political awareness and judgement, with the ability to operate effectively in high-profile and sensitive environments.
Desirable Skills (if required):
- Experience in clean energy supply chains, offshore wind, deep-water wind, electricity networks, hydrogen, storage, power electronics, advanced manufacturing, ports or industrial clusters.
- Experience leading public investment programmes, strategic funds, industrial programmes, development finance activity, national infrastructure programmes or public-private investment vehicles.
- Experience with direct investment, corporate finance, private equity, infrastructure finance, project finance, venture/growth capital or strategic industrial investment.
- Experience working with HM Treasury, government departments, devolved governments, public finance institutions, national wealth funds, development banks or regulators.
Qualifications (if required):
- Relevant degree, professional qualification or equivalent senior experience in finance, economics, business, engineering, energy, public policy.
